FEATURES
WEB
SITES OF INTEREST
There are so many cancer web sites that
try to help in their own way - perhaps by selling you a "NEW MIRACLE
BREAKTHROUGH" - that it can be overwhelming. So we have tried to select
out a very few of the best, in terms of helpfulness and higher than average
reliability. We have avoided commercial sites that want to sell you something.
The sites listed here can serve as a
switchboard to many more sites that they recommend. Click on the blue web site
address to go directly there. Normally you should be able to return to the
original referring site by using the back button. But just in case, it may pay
to jot down or bookmark the sites you find most helpful as you go along.
One final warning. Even the most
prestigious, most sincere, most careful web sites can be wrong for your
situation. That's why there are second opinions.
BEGINNERS'
WEB SITES
We plan to become one of the best sites
where cancer freshmen can get a logical and comprehensive start. Meanwhile here
are a couple other places to begin. Unfortunately both sites are unfamiliar
with the power of legitimate alternative cancer therapy, but we will recommend
other sites for that.
CONVENTIONAL
THERAPY WEB SITES
- The government's National Cancer Institute is the premier web site
for conventional cancer information, including treatment descriptions
(PDQ), literature, clinical trials, etc. www.nci.nih.gov
- Medline Plus for
laypeople and Medline for professionals provide access to those
medical journals indexed by the National Library of Medicine. This may be
the world's largest medical library, but if you don't find it here, it
doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. There are countless other specialized
or international libraries. www.nlm.nih.gov
- Spanish language cancer information is available at the New York
On-line Access to Health (NOAH) web site. www.noah_health.org
ALTERNATIVE
THERAPY WEB SITES
- Congress forced the National Institute of Health to investigate
alternative medicine. As a result NIH started with the Office of
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (OCCAM). www.occam.nci.nih.gov
- Results were so good that they have now added the larger National
Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). www.nccam.nih.gov
- The University of Pittsburgh has hosted a pioneering web site for
six years called The Alternative Medicine Homepage. www.pitt.edu/~cbw/altm.html
- Dr. Bower's Complementary and Alternative Medicine Home Page
furnishes an extensive list of other alternative web sites. www.people.virginia.edu/~pjb3s/Complementary_Practices.html
BOTH
CONVENTIONAL AND ALTERNATIVE THERAPY
- Patient's National Cancer Institute (That's us) reports on both
types of treatments, used separately or in combination, from the
perspective of recovered patients who have actually used them
successfully. www.PatientsNCI.org
- Integrating both types of treatments appears to be the new
direction for cancer therapy in America. When you find more sites that
feature both schools of medicine, please let us know so we can add them to
this list.
LOCAL
RESOURCES FOR CANCER SUPPORT
- Local support groups are often organized by type of cancer. For example, in San Diego, the largest
patient support group for prostate cancer is the INFORMED PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT
GROUP. They maintain an
informative website at www.IPCSG.org. They
meet each month to hear an expert speaker, to ask questions and share
experiences.
- Patients following an anti-cancer diet can also find support from
VEGAN interest groups.
- Hospitals and government agencies can provide names and web sites
of local support organizations.
- One outstanding organization is "The Wellness Community"
located in many cities nationwide. The Wellness Community provides a
wealth of free services for cancer patients, including support groups,
lectures, tailored exercises, meditations, etc. They can be located from
this national web site: www.TheWellnessCommunity.org
