Steps to Recovery for
Cancer Freshmen by Cancer Graduates
RESOURCES:
Doctor Lists, Reference Books
Introduction
Part 4 of 4
We
used most of these references to get well, but as patients, not doctors, we cannot
know if they are right for others.
A. FINDING
DOCTORS AND CLINICS SPECIALZING IN INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE
These resources
can help you find the doctors and/or hospitals you need that understand
INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE. If they aren't located in your area, patients and local
doctors can use them for phone consultations or to get referrals to colleagues
they may know in your area.
WARNING: As patients, we have not evaluated all these
doctors and clinics, and do not make a practice of recommending any doctor or
clinic. But we have a rule of thumb we
use to separate the most sincere and up to date doctors and clinics from those
that seem to put business before healing.
When you have had
time to research cancer you will learn that meat products that are heated over
200 degrees or show signs of browning or blackening can contain the same types
of carcinogenic chemicals as a burning cigarette. And so does the second-hand smoke from both. In California, fast-food places that broil
chicken for instance are required to post a cancer warning on the
premises. We believe that research
independent of the animal and tobacco industry shows that these are two of the
major causes of cancer in our culture.
You will also learn of laboratory tests at a leading university that
show animal proteins, etc, can make cancer cells grow many times faster
compared to eating plant foods.
So our rule of
thumb is to be skeptical of doctors and clinics who have a permissive attitude
toward allowing patients to eat animal products or smoke tobacco products. That may include most doctors and clinics
who are not up to date or just don’t want to loose business. During the recent economic downturn, we saw
that some of those who previously discouraged use of animal products have now
added meat to their menus to get more business.

The CANCER CONTROL SOCIETY (www.CancerControlSociety.com) has been maintaining lists of patients and doctors
who use nutritional and non-toxic cancer therapies for 34 years. And every
Labor Day weekend they also hold conventions near Los Angeles with three days
of lectures on the latest non-toxic cancer treatments for those who want to be,
or need to be, on the cutting edge. We
follow the disclaimer of CCS, and "do not recommend or take responsibility
for endorsing" doctors. Please let the doctors know you were referred by
the Cancer Control Society, and we would appreciate hearing how everything went
for you as well.

lists. You should be able to return to this page by clicking the back button a
couple times, but to be sure of getting back, you could make a bookmark of this
page first.

B. CLINICALLY TESTED ANTI-CANCER DIETS
We have observed that mostly-raw vegan diets (garden
vegetables, limited fruits, whole grains) seem to be the most effective diets
for reversing cancer. Animal-based diets are contraindicated according to the
research cited below, and we have not personally seen success with rice-based,
or tofu-based diets. Vegetables and fruits were key for us. Some patients do alright adding tofu and
grains, provided they do not displace too many vegetables. Whole grains are be
more powerful if sprouted. This is covered in PATIENTS' PROTOCOL STEP 4, on
nutrition.
Meanwhile the classic books below explain
the most effective types of anti-cancer diets we have used over the last 20 –
30 years. They are not sacred, and some
of us mixed and matched from all three for more enjoyment. When designing a
custom diet, it is important to use a website or pencil to calculate the daily
calories, protein, etc. to make sure the diet is adequate. Otherwise changing
diets can be disastrous to your health!
Professional assistance is highly recommended for cancer patients
because the learning curve can cause so much lost progress. This is discussed
in the Nutrition section of the PATIENTS' PROTOCOL.
The amount of raw food can be critical. In one study scientists found that it took
30 bowls of cooked broccoli to equal the flavonoids of 1 bowl of raw
broccoli. With scientific cooking they
finally got it down to where 3 bowls could equal 1 of raw.
THE CLASSICS
·
Virginia Livingston-Wheeler,
M.D., THE CONQUEST OF CANCER, 1984 edition. The strict diet which
prohibits eggs and meat is used for cancer patients. Sometimes called
"Gerson Lite," this is the easiest - most like an ordinary diet. It
may serve as a transition to the more intensive diets of Gerson and Wigmore,
which may be more powerful. Franklin Watts, New York.
·
McDougall, John, M.D.
THE McDOUGALL PLAN and his early books, before he started featuring
processed convenience foods. All of his books are based on a starch-centered vegan
diet. This diet can be converted to a mostly raw, therapeutic cancer diet by
using more raw vegetabless and adding raw juices. We don't recommend his later
books based on convenience foods for cancer patients because rawness is so
important. For a wealth of scientific vegan information, see his web site at
www.DrMcdougall.com
·
T.Collin Campbell,
PhD with Thomas M. Campbell. THE CHINA STUDY, 2005, Benbella Books,
Dallas, Tx 75206. Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell
University, Professor Campbell summarizes decades of world studies showing that
the vegan diet is much healthier, and that animal protein may speed cancer
growth by many times. Obviously this
could sabotage cancer patients. He was
a consultant to the government and reveals how nutritional policy and even
elections are manipulated by the animal industry.

·
Quillin, Patrick,
PhD, RD, CNS with Noreen Quillin. BEATING CANCER WITH NUTRITION, 1998
and newer editions, Nutrition Times Press, Inc. Tulsa, Oklahoma. This book is
listed for supplement information only, not for it's very questionable
high-protein diet, which many doctors consider to be contra-indicated for most
cancer patients. This controversy is discussed on the NUTRITION webpages of the
PATIENTS' PROTOCOL/TREATMENTS. Also please see the book above, THE CHINA STUDY.
·
Day, Lorraine, M.D.
DISEASES DON'T JUST HAPPEN and several other cancer videos, from a doctor
who cured her cancer with a program similar to the PATIENTS' PROTOCOL on this
website. Dr. Day will appeal to those
who appreciate religious inspiration. Call 1-800-574-2437 for complete list of
titles. 1998. Rockford Press, P.O. Box 8, Thousand Palms, Ca 92276.

lifestyles especially for cancer patients. 1992. Bantam Books, New York.
·
Ornish, Dean, M.D. DR.
DEAN ORNISH'S PROGRAM FOR REVERSING HEART DISEASE. Scientifically designed
lifestyles for heart patients turn out to be remarkably similar to those most
effective for cancer patients - are they on to something? 1990. Ballantine
Books.
F. PRACTICAL BOOKS ON PSYCHOLOGY AND
DEPRESSION
Psychotherapy can have a bad reputation
for making people worse, or if they are lucky, just poorer. The science behind cognitive therapy is much stronger so it is
more effective and much faster. But we
favor treating depression, anxiety, indecisiveness, etc, (usually treated by drugs as a deficiency of
certain neurotransmitters) by a combination of cognitive therapy plus supplements
that are the nutritional precursors of those neurotransmitters
·
Seligman, Martin
E.P., PhD. LEARNED OPTIMISM. Introduces cognitive therapy, the
scientific facts, and valid self-tests. 1990. Pocket Books. New York
·
Burns, David D, M.D. FEELING
GOOD. Drug-free psychological tune-ups using cognitive therapy. 1980. Avon
Books. New York.
·
Larson, Joan Mathews, PH.D. DEPRESION-FREE
NATURALLY. A practical but
complicated guide to treating many common psychological problems by using
supplements and diet to correct neurotransmitter deficiencies. This nutritional
approach is cheaper, more effective and much faster without the dangerous side
effects of the drugs sold on TV.
G. LOCAL RESOURCES FOR CANCER SUPPORT
· Hospitals and government agencies can provide names of local support organizations.
· One outstanding organization is "The Wellness Community" located in many cities nationwide. The Wellness Community provides a wealth of free services for cancer patients, including support groups, lectures, tailored exercises, meditations, etc. They can be located from this national web site: www.TheWellnessCommunity.org
·
Local cancer support
groups are often organized by the type of cancer they discuss at the
meetings. For example the largest
prostate group in San Diego is the Informed Prostate Cancer Support Group. They meet monthly to hear talks by experts
and share individual questions. http://www.ipsg.org/
H. WHAT KEEPS THE WAR ON CANCER FROM
VICTORY?
You
have completed the introduction. We repeat an important lesson we learned: We
became grateful to this cancer adventure for leading us (actually, pushing us)
through a doorway to a smarter lifestyle - much happier for us and for our loved
ones.
